Winter is coming.
Earlier today I was tagging along with one of our field producer’s special projects shoot and I learned Spokane is in for one hell of a winter.  We loitered around Gonzaga University’s quad in the center of campus. Students were walking to and from class, studying in the sunshine and brand new ROTC cadets sorting through their gear purchased by tax payer dollars.  It was a strange...

Things that are distracting me this weekend
It’s comforting to know while I wait almost three hours for a new game (Rage) to download off of Steam and wait to see a late night Wes Anderson movie, there’s always the Internet. Here’s what’s distracting me this weekend: - The only time I can sing low is late at night and probably after an evening of shenanigans. Vocal chords are running fast and loose and “Oh,...

How much can you bench press?
That moment when you realize you have no idea how your web research brought up to the Wikipedia page for mineral water. It’s kind of like that during some of my news gathering adventures. When interviewing Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich prior to the Plane Pull competition, he mentioned that he used to bench press competitively in the early 2000s back when he was a Cpl. with the Sheriff’s...

Regarding color blindness
I’m not sure how we got onto this topic, but when I bumped into councilman Steve Salvatori outside the elevators of City Hall, he mentioned he was color blind. He couldn’t tell me what color my hair is, but described it as “light colored”.  To avoid mismatching socks, he wears only white socks. When he does wear color, it’s typically blue because that’s one...

We are engineers and scientists on the Mars...
Phliuy: How many people are required to run the rover at any given time? And how did you celebrate the landing?
CuriosityMarsRover: 250 scientists and about 160 engineers -- remember this is a 24.6/7 operation! We're working in shifts. And how did we celebrate? To each his own... Tasty beverages, missed high-fives, well-deserved naps after shifts were over. :D - SLS

We are engineers and scientists on the Mars...
MilkTheFrog: Does Curiosity have any increased capacity for operating during the Martian night due to it's lack of reliance on solar power? Did you put lights on it?
CuriosityMarsRover: There are no lights on the Rover. It utilizes the night time to recharge the batteries to drive and explore during the day to take advantage of the day time.

Eager to save a beaver
Working on a story about the first beaver in Eastern Washington to be relocated this season. Ended up talking to state Rep. Joel Kretz (R-Wauconda) about his efforts to sponsor the “Beaver Bill” that was signed into legislation in June.  Kretz is a rancher in Okanogan County. He raises cattle, horses and dabbles in timber. I got curious why this guy was going against the mold, so I...

Correction:
Press Release: “…they were intoxicating arguing.”
Me: Is that like drunken bickering?
Sheriff’s PIO: Intoxicated and arguing, I fat fingered it!

Things that are distracting me this weekend
I’m working on cool things, but I keep being distracted by the internet. Here’s a few things are stealing my attention:  I like the Seattle Time’s “Today File” which is a bunch of everything news, but has their morning memo with the weird stuff.  NPR has a story on a new species of lacewing discovered on Flickr.  There’s a Kickstarter for...

Adventures in public transit
Apparently I’m not the only one who can have adventures in public transit. Even bunny rabbits can have the pleasure. Somewhere out there, a child is missing their bunny plushie, but never fear, it is having a fabulous time touring the Seattle Center Monorail. The funsies are documented in a Facebook photo gallery. Hopefully this bunny doesn’t experience a trio of crying children...

SCIENCE!
The city of Spokane amended their definitions list and some of the terms are just so geeky I can’t help but share:  Latah Formation - Sedimentary layer of claystone to fine-grained sandstone in which very finely laminated siltstone is predominant. The fresh rock ranges in color from various shades of gray to almost white, tan and rust. Much of the finer grained layers contain leaf imprints...
